As we age, it is crucial to take care of our bone health to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, causing them to become fragile and more likely to break. One effective way to combat osteopenia and osteoporosis is through targeted exercises that help build stronger bones.

The Onero Program was designed based on a research study called the Liftmore Study and focusses on high resistance and impact exercises that have specifically been proven to increase bone density. The program also incorporates important elements like balance and fall prevention, as well as basic core stability training. Patients were found to increase in all areas of functionality, as well as a subtle increase in total height due to postural changes! This is the first evidence-based, licensed program to launch in South Africa with Jen Hume Biokinetics at the forefront of this movement.
Our traditional exercise prescription of weight bearing, general strength training as well as walking, jogging and other perceived bone density directed exercises have been disproved to prevent the loss of bone mineral density and most certainly not increase BMD after a loss in this area. The Onero program is science-based and has been proven to increase BMD!
Balance and posture exercises are also important for preventing falls, which can lead to fractures, especially in individuals with osteoporosis. Incorporating exercises that challenge your balance, such as tai chi or Pilates, can help improve stability and reduce the risk of falls. However it is a myth that these exercises might prevent bone mineral density loss. They have their place in a holistic treatment approach.
It is essential to consult with a biokineticist before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing the condition. In addition to exercise, maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and getting regular bone density screenings can also help prevent osteoporosis and promote overall bone health. Prioritising your bone health through exercise and lifestyle choices is key to maintaining your overall health and well-being as you age.
